Urban Butterflies is a group for Indigenous children and youth in foster care ages 7 to 14 that meet one Sunday a month from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Our goal is to provide children and youth with a greater awareness on how to prevent risk factors and improve health outcomes for young First Nations/Metis/Inuit youth. We provide unique and fun opportunities to teach cultural art and dance, spirituality, and skills for surviving the emotional pain associated with living in foster care and away from their families. We aim to create a setting where each child in the program can learn skills to be self-reliant, and know where to go for help and support. The older girls from the Mentor Me group provide a much-needed support system to do community activities and cultural projects to enhance their lives and plan their futures.
